Someone once commented my artwork with:
Makes me think of Portal’s “the cake is a lie”
I have received few comments or appreciation for my artwork, but this comment is worth more than any reward, that I was probably seeking for when I wanted to become an artist. For me, art had ruined my life and led me to suicidal thoughts. The artwork is the result if the attempt fails. It illustrates an image of deception.
One of the few video games that I truly appreciate and find profound is Portal. I would like to incorporate a similar depth of exploration into the graphic novel or video game ‘Hints and Traps,’ which I am privately conceptualizing as a hobby and that does not yet exist.
In the video game “Portal,” the phrase “The cake is a lie” serves as a metaphor for false promises and deception. Throughout the game, the player is led to believe that they will be rewarded with cake for completing various tests set by the AI antagonist, GLaDOS. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the cake is merely a manipulative tool used to motivate the player, and it symbolizes the unattainable rewards that may never come.
The phrase has since become a popular meme and is often used to express skepticism about promises or rewards that seem too good to be true. It highlights themes of trust, manipulation, and the nature of reality within the game’s narrative.
